Position Objectives:


General Statement of Duties

Plans, coordinates, and leads athletic activities/programs for persons of all ages and abilities, focusing on sports league coordination and facility reservation management. Activities include but are not limited to, youth and adult sports leagues, special events and tournaments, recreational sports skills clinics, and coordinating community use of fields and athletic facilities.


Distinguishing Features of the Class

Under the general supervision of the Parks and Recreation Director, this position plans, coordinates, supervises, and implements all phases of Troutman Parks and Recreation athletic and recreational programming, performing related work as required. This position is classified as non-exempt and subject to the Fair Labor Standards Act overtime regulations.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plans, organizes, and directs diversified athletic events, sports, games, tournaments, and related activities and programs.
  • Collects fees and maintains accurate files and financial records.
  • Communicates information effectively and efficiently to all involved parties-coaches, referees, supervisors, participants, etc
  • Schedules practices and games for all leagues on Town properties.
  • Maintains program statistics, including program registrations and facility usage.
  • Coordinates the use and reservations of athletic facilities with school officials, non-profits, and other user groups.
  • Ensures proper maintenance of facilities; Communicates maintenance requests to Parks & Rec Maintenance Crew Leader.
  • Ensures compliance with athletic equipment and assists the Director with the preparation of items to be budgeted for annually.
  • Prepares purchase requests and orders for necessary equipment, uniforms,
  • Assists in promoting athletic programs, including developing and distributing news releases and flyers, writing program descriptions, and targeting potential participants to publicize efforts further.
  • Maintains organized storage and inventory of Town property/athletic equipment.


Additional Job Duties

As assigned by the Parks and Recreation Director and/or Town Manager.


Minimum Requirements:

  • Considerable knowledge of local and departmental ordinances, policies, and procedures in relationship to the Parks & Recreation Department and how they relate to town programs and facilities.
  • Considerable knowledge of recreation and athletics principles, practices, and methods.
  • General knowledge of the principles of the rules and regulations for various athletic programs.
  • Ability to coordinate a wide variety of specialized recreation interests and activities related to the general area of athletics.
  • Good knowledge of the principles of supervision, organization, and administration.
  • Ability to express oneself effectively in oral and written forms, communicating and exchanging all communications of program management to all involved parties.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, volunteers, key stakeholders, Town officials, and the public.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, kneeling, crouching, reaching, walking, fingering, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
  • Must be able to perform light sedentary work, exerting up to 10 pounds of force often and 25 pounds frequently.
  • During an event, hours can be extensive. Weekend hours are common as well. There may often be hours of standing, walking, and lifting supplies.
  • A portion of work takes place in an outdoor setting which can include extreme temperatures, i.e. heat, cold, temperature swings, and inclement weather.
  • This position has essential job functions that require specific physical and/or mental abilities. Additional information and provision for requests for reasonable accommodation will be provided if requested.

Desirable Training and Experience:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Sports Management, Recreation Management, or a closely related field is desired, or an equivalent combination of applicable education and experience is needed.
  • One year of sports or recreation leadership experience with an emphasis on community programming is required; two years is preferred.

Special Requirements

  • Must possess a NC Driver's License.
  • CPR and First Aid certification or ability to secure certification within six months of hire.
  • Possession of professional recreation certificate from NCRPA within 2 years of hire.


Employee will receive a 5% salary increase upon successful completion of a 6-month probationary period.
