K-9 Unit

The Department's K-9 unit is made up of 2 K-9 teams that consist of the handler and the patrol canine. Each team is assigned to one of the four patrol squads that make up the Patrol Division. The K-9 teams provide many capabilities such as narcotics detection, tracking of suspects and missing persons, building searches, and criminal apprehension when necessary.

Before being deployed on patrol each handler and their partner went through an intensive 6-week training class. Each K-9 team is required to complete a minimum of 16 hours of ongoing training per month along with going through an annual certification process administered by a nationally accredited training organization.
